COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF PROFESSIONAL AND AMATEUR FILM REVIEW
Abstract
The article deals with the analysis of modern film review as a genre with particular focus on its structural and linguistic features in the light of the author’s category. Film review being the sub-genre of reviews (theatrical, literary, musical, technical, and many others) is a type of text that combines pure functionality (its primary task is to evaluate and guide) with elements of belle-lettre style, particularly when review focuses on a work of art. Today various types of film reviews are one of the most popular forms of media texts. They may vary in form and content to a certain degree but it is their functionality combined with constant public demand for popular culture products that makes film reviews an almost ubiquitous genre of media text. Once a professional guide through the world of cinema, written by critics, film review as a genre underwent a number of important changes since internet popularized the “Do It Yourself” approach among ordinary users and cinema-goers. Another factor that greatly influenced the development of film review is steady growth and diversification of movie industry. Simple overview of reviews presented online shows that the texts could be easily divided into two large groups which we could mark as “professional reviews” and “amateur reviews” where the former are written by professional film critics or journalists, while the latter are written by ordinary film-goers who felt it necessary to present their opinion of the film in question. For this article we selected two sample reviews; one written by a journalist, another by an ordinary cinema-goer who decided to share their opinion online. Linguistic analysis of the selected texts reveals a number of differences between the two types of reviews. Said differences are found on nearly all the textual levels: structural, semantic, stylistic and pragmatic. We can come to a conclusion that the prevailing marker which divides amateur and professional review is the category of subjectivity/objectivity which in its turn clearly stems from the intention with which the authors wrote their reviews.
