Abstract

In Poland, the transformation period, initiated in 1989, brought a huge development of academic education. The number of studying youth has increased many times. This process forced building investments in higher education in Poland at an unprecedented scale. Still lively "old" traditional university centers have been developing dynamically, yet at the same time many new ones have been created. Wroclaw University of Science and Technology is the largest university in Lower Silesia and one of the best technical universities in Poland. It continues the traditions of the pre-war Technische Hochschule, founded in 1910 in German then Wroclaw - Breslau. The main campus of the university is located in the downtown and is directly connected with the spatial structure of the city. Nowadays, it is a very interesting urban and architectural complex illustrating a successful dialogue between history and modernity. Its diversity is created by buildings raised within one hundred years. Historic buildings from the early twentieth century, post-war objects in the style of socialist realism and later modernist, and finally numerous recent realizations in connection with the attractively shaped campus area, fit as a case study into interesting issues of designing contemporary academic complexes and their relationships with cities in which urban structures they function.
