OPERATIONALIZATION OF MANIPULATIVE BEHAVIOR ATTRIBUTES – ORIGINAL METHODOLOGY CASADI
Abstract
Machiavellianism is known in many areas of politics and psychology as a behavioral strategy where a qualified manipulator achieves his or her benefits through deception, flattery, intimidation, bribery, suggestion of false targets. Manipulative behavior as part of Machiavellian manifestations is a significant factor that occurs in the interpersonal context of behavior. Conceptualization and operationalization of this construct are a prerequisite for exploring manipulative manifestations as well as their theoretical definition. The contribution is aimed primarily at the possibilities of operationalization and the quantitative measurement of the attributes of manipulative behavior. Presented are the results of a factor analysis, which allowed extraction and content-specification of the three following factors: Calculativeness, Self-Assertion and Diplomacy – as predictors of manipulative behavior. At the same time, the basic parameters of this methodology, i.e. the percentage of explained variance for individual factors, as well as the overall variance, Cronbach’s alpha values for the extracted factors, factor inter-correlations and mutual comparisons of the factor assessments are presented.
