SPECTACULAR SYMBOLS IN THE IMAGINARY OF SACRED CONTEMPORARY SPACE

Abstract

The study of formal symbolical systems is a part of conceptual theories of architecture and anthropology. This type of research confirms the possibility of using general theories about symbols in architectural research, identifying attributes whose meaning can be traced back to artistic expressions, as well as observing the interaction mechanisms within the cultic and architecture program. Spectacular symbols as part of the imaginary structures are also a part of architecture: the dialectic of ascension imagery is universally linked to light; the crown and the nimbus as a symbolic expression of power; the isomorphism of the eye, of visual perception, and of divine transcendence. The spectacular forms used in architectural compositions are coagulation factors of the artistic expression of sacred spaces and serve as a mnemonic function, being imprinted in the human psyche. The aim of this paper is to present contemporary sacred architecture as a form of knowledge that brings together multiple aspects and meanings: artistic, psychological, religious, philosophical, etc., by combining various symbol systems within its structure. Systems of symbols have been used by human societies since the dawn of time and are subordinated to specific human spiritual needs. If these systems of symbols perform functions that transcend reality, then architecture needs to be analyzed in order to identify similar functions that it might perform.
