Abstract

Sustainable building structures are one of presumptions of long-lasting and environmental friendly urban areas. Building structures are affected by many contrary impacts within their lifetime, i.e. weather, human, animal, vegetable, fungal and environmental interventions, natural and non-natural disasters. Timely and appropriate maintenance or other remedial measures could be selected using up-to date diagnostics or monitoring methods. One of the big issues of the building sustainability can be found in durability or damage of a reinforcement of concrete structures. The paper demonstrates an experimental study of novel method for detecting corrosion of inaccessible rebars placed inside of reinforced concrete structures. The method is based on nonlinear dynamic ultrasonic principle as the conventional ultrasonic testing methods hail in evaluation of complicated material composing structurers or detection of their defects. Introduced method of nonlinear dynamic testing, using nonlinear dynamic phenomena accompanying the elastic wave propagation, has started to develop rapidly in the last two decades. The method extends areas of the ultrasonic testing method applicability because construction materials are typical examples where an application of conventional ultrasonic methods is very complicated. That is why civil engineering is one of the branches in which a wide application range of nonlinear ultrasonic spectroscopy methods may be expected to take place.
