STAKEHOLDERS INTENTION TO ADOPT NUTRIGENOMICS IN MALAYSIA
Abstract
Nutrigenomics (NGx) is an emerging area of study focusing on the interaction between nutrients and genotype which is useful in understanding and preventing chronic diseases. It is also called personalised nutrition, an approach that uses individual information to develop dietary advice, products and services that are beneficial for human health. The success of the introduction of NGx depends heavily on public acceptance. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to determine Malaysian stakeholders intention to adopt NGx and its associated predictors. A total of 421 respondents were involved in this study, which comprised two stakeholder groups: healthcare providers (n = 221) and patients/family members (n = 200). The data were analysed using the statistical program SPSS for MAC. The successful adoption of NGx is a complex situation which depends on several interrelated factors. The Malaysian stakeholders expressed high intention to adopt NGx, which results from their high level of trust in the key players, a high acceptance by their religion and a perception of high benefits of NGx. The stakeholders also indicated that they were moderately engaged in medical genetics and assumed NGx to have moderate risks.
