PROBLEMS AND TRENDS OF POST-SOVIET CITIES TRANSFORMATION: THE CASE OF SVERDLOVSK REGIONAL AGGLOMERATIONS

Abstract

Russian cities have been transformed considerably in the post-soviet period, including economic base, forms of ownership, architectural view, land structure, methods of planning and governance. However, the patterns of such transformation are significantly varying for different types of cities. In this paper the major transformation processes and the factors influencing the pace and scale of urban economy transformationsare discussed on the example of the cities, including in Yekaterinburg agglomeration. The authors mainly concentrate on analyzing of key trends of Russian urban agglomeration development and spatial specificity of Russian urban agglomeration systems. Considerable attention is paid to identifying the reasons of urban agglomerations shrinkage and growth in current Russian conditions. Spatial specificity of Russian urban agglomerations system is analyzed in the context of old industrial regions development. The methods of trend, statistic and spatial analysis were used to reveal and aggregate above-mentioned processes. Taking in account the current trends of the country spatial development, it notes the importance of state support agglomerations development.
