THE MOTIF OF NARRATION IN THE CONTEMPORARY RIVERSCAPES: MEANDERS OF TIME ALONG SLEZA RIVER IN WROCLAW, POLAND

Abstract

The deepening fragmentation of urban landscapes related to chaotic development processes increases interest in the concept of green infrastructure, especially in shaping the river corridors. Usually they are perceived in the context of basic ecosystem services. Nevertheless, in many cities well-known and less known attempts are made to use the river as a path of a peculiar journey in time, showing the history of place and local community. Against the background of such excellent examples like London Arcadia the author presents the general outline of the unique landscape project in the former Sleza river bed in Wroclaw and first completed stages of investment. So called Meander of time combines the functions of sustainable rainwater management with artistic interpretation of the cityВ’s development and plans for future. Narrative motifs relate equally to the natural elements of landscape, such as forests, meadows, field paths and rocks typical for the region. The landform is created in the park area in response to residents' expectations related to the millennium anniversary of the town.
