MASTERING TOPONYMS BY STUDENTS-FOREIGNERS WHILE STUDYING A LANGUAGE (ON THE MATERIAL OF THE RUSSIAN AND ENGLISH LANGUAGES)
Abstract
Mastering toponyms of a foreign language is a difficult and ambiguous process due to the fact that toponyms have a national cultural component. A toponym is seen as a complex notion indicating both ways of language development and language acquisition. A toponym performs several functions in the language. It names the exact location, represents peopleВ’s attitude towards it and manifests the mentality of the nation. Acquiring such knowledge draws an individual closer to the understanding of the inner mechanisms of the language, as well as the peculiarities of the world image of a nation and its mentality. The article describes both identical cultural elements of place nominations and those having national peculiarities. The article offers effective ways of mastering toponyms by students while studying the second language. The article includes the data concerning British and American toponyms on phonetic, semantic and structural levels. Each level places a challenge for an individual studying a language.
