ORAL HEALTH PROMOTION IN AGGRESSIVE PERIODONTITIS BY USING SALIVARY BIOMARKERS
Abstract
The aim of this study was to identify if there is a possible correlation between the salivary secretory Immunoglobulin A (IgAs), 8- hidroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and the clinical status in aggressive periodontitis (AgP). This disease has a high incidence around the globe of between 15-20% according to WHO. It is generated by the periodontopathogenic bacteria that lead to an imbalance in the production of oxygen reactive species resulting cell destruction and teeth loss in young adults. Due to evolution of technology, today it is possible to quantify salivary biomarkers in order to identify the first signs of the AgP onset and to accurately diagnosis and monitor this disease. Methods: Twenty subjects: 10 healthy control (40% males and 60% females; mean age 26.6В±4.10 years) and 10 patients with AgP (40% males and 60% females; mean age 29.2В±2.20 years) were recruited to the study. They underwent a full oral assessment in the Prevention Department of the Faculty of Dental Medicine from Constanta, between October to December 2015, during which their CIPTN scores were recorded, as well as salivary IgAs and 8-OHdG biomarkers, by the ELISA method (Salimetrics and Cayman Chemicals USA). Statistical analysis of the results was made by using MedCalc 11.0, StudentВ’s t-test and Pearson test were applied to the data. A p<0.05 was considered to have statistical significance. This study was approved by Ovidius University of Constanta's Ethics Committee for medical research involving human subjects. Results: There were high significant statistical differences between periodontal pocket depth (PPD) (p<0.0001) and the values of 8-OHdG (p=0.0001) and IgAs (p<0.0001). Also, there was a positive correlation between PPD and the values of salivary 8-OHdG (r=0.673, p=0.032) and IgAs (r=0.790, p=0.006) in the AgP patients, suggesting the utility of these two parameters in the evaluation of periodontal status in this disease. Conclusions: In the groups studied salivary 8-OHdG and IgAs were found to be biomarkers in the diagnosis and monitoring of aggressive periodontitis. If this finding can be replicated in bigger groups, these tests may improve the diagnosis and monitoring of AgP and in so doing help to control the severity of these diseases in the population.
