SOUTHERN ITALIAN ENTREPRENEURS: TOMMASO ASTARITA AND THE GENERAL BANK OF THE SORRENTO PENINSULA
Abstract
The story of Tommaso Astarita is an expression of the passage, made by the few dynamic financial operators of the South, from the ancient regime society to the modern society, implementing in their work the separation between the functions of merchant-entrepreneur-banker, first indistinct. With the General Bank of the Sorrento Peninsula, in fact, one of the first private banking institution was born in the South of Italy, under the legal form of a joint-stock company, able to resist the competition of the big national banks.
