REFLECTION AND SELF-REFLECTION OF ROMA AND BEING ROMA IN SLOVAK LITERATURE FOR YOUTH
Abstract
The study brings forward the results of analysis and interpretation of legends and social prose for youth, which deal with coexistence of majority population and Roma ethnic group in Slovakia. In the introduction, brief history of Roma people in Slovakia and the term “romipen” is described. Research of the literary material was realised on the basis of one’s own – different – alien trichotomy. Its goal was to find out: 1. what are the modifications of mental image about coexistence of Roma with non-Roma in literary work by Slovak non-Roma ethnic group; 2. what is the self-image (self-reflection) of Roma in their authentic literary work. It is stated in the conclusion, that the folk legend reflects stereotypes of the projection of Roma in such an image, in which it has been recorded in social memory of non-Roma for a long time. In social prose of non-Roma the knowledge about Roma identity (“romipen”) is absent. In self-portrayal of Roma, there is either self-identification with being Roma or an effort to adapt oneself to majority society with protection of one’s own ethnic distinction. In the literary work of both ethnic groups inter-ethnic barrier elements are present.
