LINGUISTIC PECULIARITIES OF INVECTIVES IN DIALECT SOCIETY (LATGALIAN OLD BELIEVERS)
Abstract
The modern Russian language is characterized by the increase in the use of invectives in speech. Invectives are a socially significant phenomenon; therefore their study is relevant for both linguists and the society. The increase in the use of invectives deserves a special consideration taking for the study the dialect material extracted from one dialect system, since it can provide an insight into the functioning of invectives in a separate social stratum. Research material: the whole corpus of invectives recorded by the authors in Latgale (the south-eastern part of Latvia) consists of more than 3,000 units. All of them have been recorded by Jelena Korolova in the period 1977-2019 from the Old Believers of Latgale (they appeared in Latgale after the Church Schism of 1666). The Old Believers’ most important prohibitions regulating their everyday behaviour are prohibitions on foul language and smoking. Research approach and methods: we analyse invectives that serve to express “strong negative emotions by strong means of language” (Vladimir Zhel’vis), but only those that have never been tabooed and have always been rather acceptable in the given society as they have never been considered to be obscene in character (in a broad sense). Offensive words, abusive language, and curses occupy a special place in the language of any culture. Expressions of negative emotions in a language are more diverse and numerous than expressions of positive emotions. The linguistic peculiarities of the expression of negative emotions by means of invectives, their structure, motivation and functional valency are considered within the framework of the ethno-linguistic approach to the study of linguistic material.
