CHALLENGES FOR UNIVERSITY TEACHERS IN HIGHER EDUCATION IN A NEW MILLENNIAL ERA

Abstract

The Millennial generation comprises the majority of learners in the traditional university setting. This group of learners appears to have a different learning style and expectations towards university teachers when compared with previous generations of learners. In the present paper, the authors discuss the current challenges that millennial learners present. The aim of the research is to examine the expectation of Millennial students towards the role of university teachers in higher education. The research was based on a questionnaire survey, in which 365 Millennial students from Latvia expressed their expectations towards university teachers and the preferred learning style. The research found that the Millennial generation students wished to have their learning as an interesting and amusing process of cognition. A university teacher who was perceived as a friend rather than an authority played an essential role in it. The students expected to have fast feedback from their university teachers (both formal and oral) and to have them reachable on social networks, while their lecture materials – easily available in the e-environment. To sustain the attention of Millennial generation students, it was essential to employ a combination of various teaching methods within a lecture, i.e. group work, discussion and giving practical examples as well as use information technologies.
