PHYSICAL CAPACITY AND ABILITY TO EXERCISE OF POWERLIFTERS WITH VARIOUS LEVELS OF TRAINING

Abstract

Introduction: Significant post-training adaptation factors of the powerlifting players are the increase in muscle mass and strength, depending on the volume, intensity and time used in specialized training, with an ambiguous effect on cardiovascular and respiratory fitness. The aim of this study is to present the state of physical fitness, cardiovascular and respiratory systems in two group of powerlifters. Methods: In order to verify the hypothesis, 15 advanced (SEA) and 15 less advanced (LEA) powerliftwers were admited for the study. Their age, basic somatic data and maximum bench press, deadlift, squat and total three attempts results were recorded. Then, the subjects performed the Wingate test to record the anaerobic power value and a graded cycloergometric test during which, at maximum intensity, the basic circulatory and respiratory variables were determined. Results: The obtained data showed that SEA had significantly higher BMI (p=0.009) and obtained better results in absolute and relative values of bench press (p=0.005; p=0.013)), deadlift (p<0.001), squat (p<0.001), and total three attempts (p<0.001) than LEA. In contrast, the anaerobic power ratios in both groups were similar and the LEA subjects achieved higher values of the relatively expressed VO2max (p=0.012), pulse pressure - PP (p=0.028) and the rate pressure product - RPP (p=0.01) than the SEA. Conclusions: Although the higher sports level of the SEA was confirmed by a higher BMI and better sports performance, it did not affect the development of anaerobic power determined by the non-specific Wingate test for these athletes. However, prolonged strength training of the tested athletes led to the improvement of cardiovascular function, despite the lack of influence on the development of the aerobic capacity of the body.
