DELIMITATION WORKS BETWEEN THE SLOVAK STATE AND THE GERMAN REICH

Abstract

After the military defeat of Poland, the course of the border with Slovakia changed. Germany and Slovakia signed in autumn 1939 in Berlin the Treaty, on the basis of which Slovakia regained the Northern parts of SpiВљ, Orava and Kysuce region, which had been joined to Poland between 1920 and 1938. One of the most significant problems was the determination of the definitive course of the new border. The border was determined by negotiations between the Slovak and the German side until 1940. On each section of the Slovak-Polish border worked a separate border commission with German and Slovak delegates. The major problems for commissions represented in particular the designation of boundaries in the terrain. The border stones were missing, eventually, it was necessary to find out their real state, designation, placement density, etc. Delimitation works have not been easy and work was protracted until 1943. This was caused by the disputes over the territory and often unclear property rights. The Commission attempted to resolve these issues at the joint meetings. The breakthrough in resolving border disputes brought the negotiations in 1942 in TrstenГЎ and StarГЎ ?ubov?a. The disputed claims were resolved by the transfer of assets and border areas between individual states. After completion of the work, the Commission was supposed to draw up border maps together with outlines of the common border. However, a number of issues still remained unresolved. The largest were property problems of the inhabitants who had land on the opposite side of the border. As in the past, the German and Slovak authorities solved this situation through intergovernmental agreements on local border traffic.
