WESTERN VERSUS EASTERN BIG DATA PRIVACY CONCERNS AMONG YOUNG GENERATION
Abstract
The acquisition and administration of “big data” has become a highly-debated issue not only within the information technology field, but more broadly in the political sociology and social arena ethics as well. While big data may just be another technology used to better find customers (from a business point of view) or help people (from a governmental point of view), its use and misuse has made it a topic of much discussion. Users continue to see lots of data being gathered, stored and analyzed about them as consumers (businesswise) or citizens (government wise) for a variety of reasons. One must assume that most consumers are aware that lots that their information is being collected. This study investigates attitudes toward the collection and use of personal data, big data, data mining and data warehousing by business and governments in Romania and compares the Romanian perspective with attitudes in France, United States and Vietnam comparing Eastern and Western perspectives. To our surprise, we observed that Romanian and American attitudes toward big data collection and usage are more similar than Romanian and French attitudes or Asian attitudes.
