MOTIVATION REGARDING THE CAREER CHOICE IN THE MEDICAL FIELD
Abstract
Background: Some recent studies showed a growing interest regarding the motivation influencing the career choice in medical field, because right choice can directly influence the academic performance and the career evolution. These studies suggest that the career choice of dental and medical students may be very different. The aim of this study was to provide a comparison of motivation regarding career choice of dental and medical students studying in the same university. Methods The questionnaire for this study was developed based on previous studies on motivation of students from faculty of medicine and dental medicine regarding the career choice. Responses to a self-completed questionnaire of fifth and sixth year medical and dental students at the “Ovidius” University of Constanta were analyzed to identify factors influencing their career choice. The questionnaire was distributed to 114 medical students and 98 dental students chosen by a random selection. The investigation took place during the lecture time, and not all fifth and sixth year medical and dental students were present. Results The results showed that the factors that motivate the students from the faculty of dental medicine were related to the future of their career like, secure job, the possibility to practice immediately after graduation, ability to work independently, regular work schedule, the possibility of finding a job abroad followed by the opportunity to help other people. Instead, the students from the faculty of medicine were more motivated by factors related to future career opportunities, patient care and working with people, the use of personal skills and interest for science. Furthermore, working experience was an important factor that motivate all students, mainly the dental students. Conclusions Comparing the motivational factors the students from faculty of medicine showed a more professional attitude in which patient care, working with people and intellectual challenge constituted central motivating factors. In contrast, the students from dental medicine showed more confidence to factors related to the future of their career, personal and financial gain. However, the findings of this study cannot be generalized because it was done in a single university center. Nevertheless, this study could provide valuable information on the reasons for choosing a professional career among the students from the “Ovidius” University of Constanta.
