THE DIFFERENCES IN DEALING WITH HISTORY IN POST-2000 GERMAN PROSE
Abstract
Numerous films, documentaries and novels including their film versions in the 21st century are evidence of interest in analysing the recent history. This article focuses on the two totalitarian systems that have again become a discussed issue in German prose after the year 2000, and examines different approaches to the history and different choice of topics of historical events by authors of both the old and new German federal states. The authors from the former West Germany have the tendency to address the following issues: one´s own painful family past, active collaboration with the Nazi Regime in the Third Reich, and the image of the civil Germans as victims, a long taboo subject. Writers from the former GDR devote minimally to the topic of the 2WW. More often they deal with the past of East Germany and they cover the period before, during and after the fall of the Berlin wall. Authors of the contribution use the literary analysis as the scientific method for the interpreting German prose of the 21st century.
