ROLE OF WATER AND GREENERY IN URBAN COMPOSITION. SELECTED PROBLEMS.
Abstract
Water and greenery have always accompanied cities. Initially, their role was purely utilitarian, while over time, during the modern period, they started toВ—in conjunction with buildings and the open public spaces of representative squares and streetsВ—build the urban composition of many European cities. During the period of the nineteenth-century excessive densification of urban tissue linked with the sudden increase in industrial production and the influx of people into cities, greenery and polluted water practically dis-appeared from urban spaces. All of the most important urban planning manifestoes that were announced later postulated the need to heal cities, including through the introduction of greenery and water. This trend is in line with the currently fashionable terms like eco-city, sustainable development or even smart city. Can these ideas stand the test of time? This review of contemporary designs and built projects of selected fragments of European cities is meant to verify whether such healing is possible in the context of another expansion of cities that has been taking place over the last two centuries.
