USE OF GRAPHIC REPRESENTATION OF THE DECISION MAKING PROCESS IN SAFE BEHAVIOR DEVELOPMENT ON THE STREETS
Abstract
In the context of an increased traffic volume and number of pedestrians on the streets and roads, we can observe an increase in the number of road traffic accidents involving road users, particularly children and adolescents. Children and adolescents get involved in road traffic accidents mainly due to ignorance of the rules of safe behavior on the streets and roads or traffic violations, as they do not comprehend the consequences of these violations. Therefore, it is very important to develop a sense of discipline and orderliness in schoolchildren so that they can get accustomed to obey the traffic law and the rules of safe behavior on the streets and roads; and to develop an ability to feel confident in constantly changing traffic conditions. This focus area is an important national task and must become a school priority for all teaching staff. This problem can be solved thanks to timely and proper training provided for the youngest pedestrians – children. In the educational process, the experience of handling road situations can be gained in and safe behavior skills can be consolidated by method of «prediction tree». This method helps develop visual thinking, creativity, farsightedness, and correlate arguments and facts. The study enrolled 14-15-year-old students. We determined the type of schoolchildren’s behavior in unexpected dangerous situations and calculated the response time using Joseph Block test. The experiment enrolled 150 students. It demonstrated positive shifts in the students’ response time and the increase in the number of adolescents behaving in a rational way. The experimental group was found to show a substantial change in the schoolchildren’s response time. Therefore, the method allows us not only to systematize schoolchildren’s knowledge and analyze possible emergency situations, but also to assess the way of their handling.
