Abstract

Background: Chronic pain complaints are modulated by many psychological and psychosocial factors. Low back pain is a complex multidimensional phenomenon. The aim of the investigation was to determine if the personality features and the subjective feeling of pain management participate in the variance of depressive symptoms and automatic negative thoughts at chronic musculoskeletal pain patients. Method: 84 musculoskeletal pain patients of Pain Treatment Outpatient Clinic (duration since initial onset of pain>3 months). The following method were applied: Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI), Back Inventory, our psychological semistructural interview. Having estimated the parameters of regression, the goodness of fit was tested. It was found out that the model fits the data. Results: Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that extraversion, neuroticism, and the feeling of pain management (p<0.001)were significant predictors of depressive symptoms. The model nr1 explained more than 50% of the total variance in predictors of depressive symptoms. The intensity of pain revealed to be a less prominent predictor than the strongest psychological predictors. Conclusions: Extraversion was the single strongest predictor (negative) of depressive symptoms. Neuroticism was a positive predictor. In case of persons with different personalities, one selected approach to the pain therapy will not be efficient in all the cases and in respect to each patient. The results obtained, though so far presented on the basis of the examination of a small number of patients, give some basis to improve the process of identification of patients with the risk of depressive symptoms occurrence and worsening, due to some specified qualities of personality
