PHILOSOPHICAL APPROACH TO THE PROBLEMS OF GRAPHIC DESIGN AND DESIGN EDUCATION IN INFORMATION SOCIETY
Abstract
Modern stage of the development of Information society is characterized by changes in the nature of information delivery. The growth of importance of visual communications in contrast to the verbal ones is marked by many researchers. Visual information becomes an important factor of social practices construction, such as social communication between groups, elites and active-passive majority, social mimesis, etc. Graphic design becomes one of the instruments that form our cultural identity, and graphic designer often becomes a public figure. At the same time the technologies of image processing and transmission are developing rapidly and the problems of their professional interpretation and adaptation for users are put before the design community. New technologies allow users to create content and thus change the social communication. Also new areas appear in graphic design, such as web-design and user interface design. In the situation of significant social communication changes and intensive development of technologies the questions concerning the necessity of classical design education and its modernization are becoming relevant. Being far from negation of classical design education, the author states that a new concept is needed, paying more attention to the basics of social communications and cultural studies as well as new technologies and problems of human-computers interactions, in order to make designers more thinkers then craftsmen.
