Abstract

ERP is the acronym of Enterprise Resource Planning, essentially an integrated management of the fundamental processes of a company, and comprises a multitude of factors, such as: hardware, software, personnel, functions, processes, etc. In the last decades, the term ERP has been identified with ERP integrated software systems that enable the integration of all processes and information from a company into a one software platform. The ERP software represents the pillar of any modern company, because its own set of integrated IT applications support the core business processes of all company’s departments: accounting, finance, sales, acquisitions, inventory management, human resources, production etc. While mentioning the punched cards and tabulating machines of the 1940s, the modern history of these software systems began with in-house applications in the early 1960s, continued with Material Requirement Planning (MRP) solutions in the mid-1960s, and renewed in the 1980s with Manufacturing Resources Planning (MRP II) and in the 1990s with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) – name given by Gartner Inc., and with more recent ERP developments in the 21st century, such as ERP II, integration with mobile devices, cloud-based ERP solutions.
