THE ACTUALITY OF THE MISSION OF SAINT BASIL THE GREAT FROM A SOCIOLOGICAL, SOCIAL-PHILANTHROPIC AND RELIGIOUS-CANONICAL PERSPECTIVE

Abstract

We live in a time of intense turmoil, doctrinal reevaluations of all sociological systems and philosophical concepts, which attempt to encompass within one unit the three fundamental dimensions of existence: God, man and the world. Under the avalanche of destructive theories, all the "strong" foundations of philosophical theories and traditional religions lose their firmness. We are witnessing a conceptual dissolution of the contemporary world that tends to melt in an ocean of relativism regardless of any effort to become human. Modern man is as lonely as ever, and the solution he finds makes him plunge into an exaggerated consumerism that gives him the illusion of a plenitude that proves ephemeral. Satiated with the ideological reductionism that brought humanity on the verge of collapse, the modern man chose as an effective weapon the indifference and the a priori refusal of any unitary doctrinal construction. Neither the authentic and traditional Christianity could escape this general attack carried on the front of contemporary philosophy. The concepts of Christian faith, clarified in the first Christian millennium, now undergo re-evaluations from the most unusual angles, reaching a confusion associated with primordial chaos. Through this subject we want to demonstrate that what has been accomplished with dedication and sacrifice remains eligible over time and the enlightening and edifying word of the sermons of this philanthropist and theologian Saint, continues over the centuries, always being up to date. Thus, through the "social laboratory" undertaken, we have demonstrated through the research instruments used, the actuality of the canonic rules, homilies and social-philanthropic actions of this Great Saint.
