Abstract

Apophatic theology appears in every religion. The reasons for this approach to theology, however, are different. The present text focuses on the three monotheistic religions: Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. The first part is devoted to analysis of selected religions and how they develop negative theology. In Christianity we deal with Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite and Master Eckhart. In Islam, we focus on the arguments submitted by Al Ghazali and Ibn Rushd. In Judaism, we focus on the idea of Maimonides and its interpretation of Divine simplicity. In the second part, we compare the reasons for which the following authors oriented to via negativa. In conclusion we verify the possibility of apophatic theology in dialogue between religions.
