BARRIER-FREE USE OF ZOOLOGICAL GARDENS CASE STUDY
Abstract
This article focuses on the question of the barrier-free use of zoological gardens with respect to the legislative provisions for this issue in the legal system. A zoological garden is a place of scientific and cognitive interest intended for the breeding of endangered and less endangered animals. By virtue of their logical purpose these facilities should be designed as barrier-free to serve everybody. It focuses on the basic barrier-free criteria which are demonstrated in two examples - Wroclaw Zoo and Ostrava Zoo. Public areas and spaces, such as zoological gardens, are an integral part of public spaces which provide educational, cognitive and relaxation functions to their inhabitants. Due to the intensive use of these spaces, it is necessary and important to assess these facilities not only in logistical, technical and economic terms, but also in terms of their barrierfree nature and the movement of persons (travellers) from all life stages (child, adult, elderly, persons with a locomotive or orientation handicap).
