THE SPECIAL ECONOMIC ZONES – SPACE ARCHITECTURE AND PEOPLE

Abstract

The article is an analysis of the contemporary shape of special economic zones in Poland. The attempt presents the complexity of spatial and landscape interactions observed at the interface between privileged areas and urban and suburban spaces. Special economic zones had a strong influence on changes taking place in the Polish economy, labor market, social processes and spatial transformation of the city and regions. Currently, SEZ have become one of the symbols of the Polish political transformation. They are not at the center of our attention, but they have a significant impact on the Polish manufacturing industry. SEZ is also another form of structure and change of the existing configuration of industrial areas in cities. The strategic task of special economic zones was to introduce to the Polish realities of the early nineties of the last century modern production plants with new production technologies and a change in the quality of work, increasing its efficiency. The interdisciplinary nature of the article is a multidirectional attempt to highlight issues related to the functioning of SEZ in Poland. As a result of the analysis of various studies, the publication presents both positive and negative aspects of these zones, which constitutes an objective summary covering almost a quarter of the lifetime of the SEZ in Poland. Contemporary urban and suburban space undergoes transformation, changing the purpose of old buildings and establishing new ones, forcing reconstruction of existing transport systems and directing employees to new routes.
