VARIATIONS FOR SOPRANO AND MIXED CHOIR CIULEANDRA WRITTEN BY VASILE SPATARELU
Abstract
The paper †Ciuleandra – Variations' for mixed choir, written by the composer Vasile Spătărelu, highlights a Romanian folkloric play from the region of Muntenia-Argeş, particularly known as a dance and holler song with progressive accelerated rhythm, carrying profound symbols which relate to the folkloric practice of magic. Vasile Spătărelu rearranges the whole composition in variations, by using methods such as melodic, rhythmic, metric, harmonic and improvisational transformation, obtaining a series of variations of noble complexity that hold the emblem of his unmistakable and unique style. The unity of the theme is maintained by the intonations of folkloric music, while harmonic and rhythmic processes are progressively contoured, leading towards a real metamorphosis through the soprano's improvised solo during the middle part of the piece. The distinct polyphonic layers allow for repeating and development of motives generating creative contexts which amplify the general expressivity of the composition.
