Abstract

Background. Many theories in scientific publications are focused on assessing the growth of particular regions and their mutual comparisons. Many authors are dealing with the issues such as economic growth and development of regions. The goal of the paper is to find out what impact on the enhancement of regional gross domestic product has issues such as employment, average wage, number of small and medium enterprises and road network density. Then as a next step to identify the groups of regions through cluster analysis that are the most similar by means of selected available statistics in the time frame of years 2006-2015. Methods. The scientific research methods such as correlation analysis and cluster analysis executed in selected years were used. Regions at the NUTS III level have been monitored. Results. The correlation analysis showed a strong direct dependence in all regions within two indicators, the average wage and the number of business entities. The road network density had lower impact on regional development, i.e. regional GDP per capita. The cluster analysis shows that the government Slovak Republic has not been able to help the regions falling behind to reach the most developed Bratislava region during the entire monitored period. Conclusions. An indispensable factor within the increasing interest in regional disparities in Slovakia is their gradual deepening and hence the increasing sensitivity of public to uneven regional development. Regional policy and its effective implementation in practice are the key instruments of state government, public authorities and organizations as well as regional and local authorities. We can conclude that Slovak Republic is not able to manage how to reduce significantly the disparities between Bratislava region and other regions in Slovakia.
