META-COGNITION – AN ESSENTIAL STRATEGY FOR PRACTICE

Abstract

Practice represents the most important aspect in a performerВ’s life. It is a creative process that improves musical and functional abilities that one needs in order to master music for performance. Practicing strategies that focus on meta-cognitive skills for deeper understanding and learning, like setting and monitoring goals, or developing the ability to persist in spite of the problems that may appear and also cultivating a growth mind-set (especially in young instrumentalists and singers), have been shown to result in permanent learning improvements. Meta-cognition, the process of thinking about thinking, is one of the essential aspects of truly understanding and performing a musical piece. It develops the skills that are necessary in order to use the musical talent and diverse information in situations that are beyond the context in which it was learned. In the process of learning a musical work, in order to perform it, one has to make use of two kinds of prior knowledge: knowledge about musical theory, form, harmony, style, instrumental or singing technique and knowledge about how learning works. Performers that understand how and why they are thinking, considering it as an action they are taking when sight-reading, learning, memorising and performing a musical work are independent artists that have more confidence in their ability to achieve goals.
