CUBAN TOURIST ENCLAVES: A CRITICAL APPROACH
Abstract
Cuba is one of the fastest developing tourist regions in the Caribbean, this dynamic growth in tourist traffic is caused by the increased investment in the tourism infrastructure. Since the '90s a trend in the tourist infrastructure can be observed, where building all-inclusive hotels in the coastal region has become increasingly popular. In Cuba's case those were usually closed areas – tourist enclaves, where only foreign tourists and cuban staff could reside. Thus the tourist regions were located in isolated places, such us islands: Cayo Coco, Cayo Largo del Sur. The inception of the cuban tourist enclaves was caused by two factors: isolating tourists in order to better control them and isolating cubans from the western living standards and lifestyle. The goal of this article is to critically analyze the development of new cuban enclaves as well as those already existing. The elaboration considers both quantitive and qualitive problems, which are analyzed spatially in polo turistico system. The issue will be presented against the backdrop of other tourist regions across the globe. In addition this article aims to identify the present and potential environmental, societal and economical conflicts brewing in the tourist regions, in context of the sustainable development. Field studies conducted in 2010 and 2018 are the basis of this article.
