RUSSIAN CRITICISM OF THE 1890S-1900S ABOUT LITERARY WORKS OF WACLAW SIEROSZEWSKI
Abstract
Short stories and novels by Waclaw Sieroszewski were periodically reviewed in critical and bibliographic sections of the leading Russian magazines and journals of the time: “??????? ?????” (Russkaja mysl’) (Moscow), “??????? ?????????” (Russkoe bogatstvo), “??? ?????” (Mir Bozhij), “?????” (Zhizn'), “????? ?????” (Novoe slovo), “??????? ??????” (Vestnik znanija) (all - St.Petersburg) and others. The most intensively the works of the Polish writer were published and reviewed in the period from 1895 till 1905, when the most famous of his Yakutian works had appeared. All these facts indicate that the talent of the Polish writer in Russian society and the literary-critical environment was treated with great interest and respect. Unfortunately, in the current scientific discourse about Sieroszewski there isn’t practically any question of how his works were evaluated and interpreted by the contemporary criticism in Russia. The present article is an attempt to highlight this topic, albeit not in full.
