NIKOLAI BERDYAEV. FROM HOLLINESS TO GENIUS
Abstract
The ecstasys of creation has been among the main concerns of the great Russian philosopher. Therefore, in his opinion, creation refers to giving great benefit to mankind. The genius is the one providing the creation force/creativity, while holiness and asceticism turn off the creation power. This study shows why Berdyaev is describing the two concepts in antithesys, thus being outside of Orthodox theology notion of holiness. Berdyaev identifies the isolation and inner consumption of the ascetic with an impoverishment of human nature. Sanctity which is acknowledged for its qualities does not produce as much tension and inner genius sacrifice thus being a more facile way to leave something for posterity. The genius on the other hand, is a superior way of living and certainly much more appreciated by God. This critical review of the two concepts reveals a way for the modern man to conciliate the sacred with the profane, mystical experience with academic study.
