SUBTERRANEAN ARCHITECTURE AS A MEMORIAL SPACE. ITS INFLUENCE ON HUMANS SENSORY SYSTEM
Abstract
Thesis : Underground architecture engages our sensory system in order to depict and intensify its meaning. The motherВ’s uterus defines first space in which humans embryo evolves with no access of light, meagre sound reception, suspended in an aqueous environment. In prehistoric times caves and dugouts acted as a cramped, safe place, giving the inhabitants a sense of shelter and protecting them from animals and rough weather conditions. Later it began to adopt different meanings and functions, which often depended on the cultural and geographical background. Over time, everything to be found underground started to be considered as the world of the dead, a mysterious land - sensed both in a positive and negative way. A subterranean site placed refers to traumatic events in history. Projects analyzed in this article are characterized by depiction of post-memory and traces of hidden stories. It is an architectural attempt to influence all of human senses in order to create a general, profound feeling, giving the spectator a subjective view on a certain event. The author tries to analyze sensoric tools, which were used in projects to intensify the perception of underground space and its meaning. The very act of placing an architectural form under the ground level evokes a vast number of feelings and emotions in the recipient. It stimulates all our senses and is often memorized as a downreaching experience. The foundation of the study will be based on, among others: Museum - Memorial Site in Be??ec (Poland), Museum in Katy? (Russia) and its underground bell, Centre for Dialogue Prze?omy in Szczecin (Poland) etc. The author proves, throughout a thorough analysis and collecting of data, that each type of underground building disturbs visitorВ’s perception, strongly affects the senses and entire body. This process is the creatorВ’s (architectВ’s) intentional act in order to induce a specific feeling and leave a long-lasting trace of experience.
