SILVER ECONOMY DEMAND FOR CREATIVE TOURISM
Abstract
Like the European Union, the Slovak Republic is also experiencing rapid aging of population, which is caused mainly by an increase in the expected life expectancy combined with a low birth rate. In general, the negative impacts of population aging on public finances of the state are analysed. Less attention is paid to the impact of aging on national economy in terms of volume changes and the structure of supply and demand for products and services. The concept of silver economy can be defined as the potential represented by innovative products and services developed to improve the quality of life in increasing age. People have been receiving creative experiences during their holidays for a long time. However, presently we can observe a significant increase in popularity of creative tourism and also increased demand related to it. Creative tourism provides people with a certain sense of success and fulfilment, thanks to the experience and new skills they will learn during their vacation. The aim of this paper is to analyse the demand and possibilities of linking the silver economy and creative tourism. We conducted a questionnaire research among respondents over 60 (retirees) and we surveyed the demand for creative tourism. We approached 320 respondents, of which 256 matched the age condition. The survey was conducted in January and February 2018. First of all, the primary research outcome showed low awareness of the respondents about creative tourism, as well as low interest in this type of holiday. However, the results highlighted the interest of this segment in urban creative centres. This information can be used by representatives of municipalities to plan future services provided to pensioners in their self-government.
