Abstract

The article deals with activating methods for geography teaching in out-of-school environment in Slovakia, particularly in the Nitra City. Moreover, it focuses on the popularization of geography among different age categories via the activating methods such as didactic games and experiments. Activating methods lead teaching so that educational goals are achieved mainly on the basis of pupils' own activity with the emphasis being placed on solving problems. Teaching by exploration and discovery by pupils themselves as well as finding the truth is an important part of education in the process of adopting key concepts in the field of natural (but not only natural) sciences. The activating methods, namely didactic games and experiments, were intended especially for primary school pupils and they were applied at one-day event in the shopping center during the period of 2011-2018. Furthermore, the event was aimed at popularizing geography as a science among pupils of different age categories. Didactic games and experiments were demonstrated also by university students of geography teaching study programs. During this event, most of the students gained their first experience and skills with geography teaching of pupils of different age categories.
