Abstract

This article presents the perception of professional competences of secondary education teachers from the point of view of wide and open professionalism. We pay our attention to the understanding of the concept of a competence and we define each competence according to the career standards. These career standards were accepted and approved by the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic in 2017. The career standard defines teacher competences in three dimensions: the dimension of the pupil, the dimension of the educational process, and the dimension of the pedagogical worker. The study shows research results which confirm that in the field of further education of teachers it is necessary to support the development of their competences to work with pupils with specific educational needs and maintain discipline in the class, as well as competences focused on the development of critical thinking of pupils and introduction of innovations in teaching. It is also necessary to strengthen the ability of self-reflection and planning of their own professional development. The study also points out the fact that the development of teacher competences must be a reflection on the educational results of pupils and real achievements of teachers.
