Abstract

Creation and development of functional reading literacy is presently a actual topic. The ambition of this paper is to highlight the current situation in reading literacy in the Slovak environment. The starting point of thinking are the results of the international survey under the Program for International Student Assessment, in which our students achieve below average. The author is looking for possible solutions to given problems, highlights the need to develop reading competencies in civics. The objectives of the subject corresponds to the requirements of reading literacy, are aimed at promoting the unique position of each person; active citizenship and personal commitment as well as the inclusion of a person into work life and social life. Metacognitive approach to promoting understanding of the text is presented as one of the starting points of active reading. The approach is based on the individual skills of students. Pupil - good reader is able to understand the text, can to deduce, explains. The author highlights the role of the teacher in the development of metacognitive abilities, which are aimed at creating specific reading strategies, support motivation, conviction of the reader's own ability to read a student's individual interest. Contribution points to the possibility of applying metacognitive approach in working with incoherent text. Incoherent types of texts are frequent in practical life. In preparing future teachers need to reflect on the problem of understanding these texts. Metacognitive aspect in the context of incoherent texts requires use of integration activities and interpretive nature, aimed at understanding interactions between the various components of discontinuous text. The author presents the view that the preparation of teachers of civic education in the Slovak environment with a focus on the development of reading literacy will lead to the formation of individual students' reading skills, while promoting those competencies which will then transformed into an active educational work.
