SLOPE PROTECTION IN URBAN GREEN AREAS: EXAMPLE OF WARSAW SLOPE IN “NA KSIAZECEM” PARK IN WARSAW, POLAND
Abstract
Currently slope protection is a serious and important issue, but one which is very often overlooked in urban public spaces especially in Poland. Although the site selected for this case study, Warsaw slope, is protected by the Warsaw Provincial Heritage Monuments Protection Office (Polish: Sto?eczny Konserwator Ochrony ZabytkГіw), there is no consensus as to its revitalization via the use of stabilization projects. Additionally, Warsaw slope is being progressively and continuously destroyed by erosion and the poor condition of site vegetation, as well as by its users (pedestrians and cyclists). At present, many companies offer a variety of slope protection methods including mainly technical systems; however, these methods do not always work well in urban conditions, especially in historical green areas where a lot of valuable plants prevent the installation of these systems. Moreover, despite the extensive literature on slope protection near highways, in mountainous landscapes, or in degraded or rural areas, there is a shortage of current and available literature on slope protection in urban green areas. The slope protection approach for green areas proposed in this paper is based on the use of selected cover plants and some technical methods adjusted to local conditions.
