PHYSICAL ACTIVITY OF WOMEN AS A FACTOR IN OVERCOMING HEALTH BARRIERS
Abstract
One of priority activities in EU is health promotion among all the age groups, resulting from health policy implemented by World Health Organization and European agencies. This is especially important among senior citizens since the precondition for successful ageing is to maintain a good psychophysical fitness through participation in various forms of sport and recreation. With reference to the theory of activity, all humans, even older adults, need physical exercise and being active. Activity and sense of association is, according to gerontologists, the best solution for the problem of ageing. Preventive and therapeutic values of physical activity have been well documented scientifically. In modern societies, local recreation programs have been implemented, contributing to increased physical activity and increased social awareness of citizens in terms of health behaviours. The focus of the present study is on physical activity of older women, which is the basic factor in overcoming health and adaptive barriers. The aim of the study is to present the activities of local environment in terms of activation of women in senior age. The problem is important and topical, both from the individual and social standpoint since it concerns women at the retirement age, who represent a substantial part of Polish society.
