ENERGY INTENSITY AS A PARAMETER OF REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN SLOVAKIA
Abstract
Energy is an essential factor of economic development and energy issues thus pose a major challenge to a long term sustainability of economic development as well as energy security of national economies in terms of energy availability and affordability. Recent economic theories propose that the relationship between sustainable economic development, energy security and efficiency of energy consumption plays a prominent role in overcoming these challenges. This study examines energy intensity within the context of regional development. More specifically, it examines the measures of regional development and energy of Slovak regions during years 2003 through 2013. The study presents and discusses measures of regional disparity in economic output and energy intensity. Study documents that significant regional disparities prevail despite significant improvements in energy efficiency across all regions and concludes that these disparities may undermine the sustainability of future economic growth.
