VARIATIONS OF THE ARTISTIC PORTRAYAL OF THE HANDICAP (DISABILITY OF THE LOWER LIMBS) IN THE WORLD LITERATURE FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS

Abstract

In the paper we focus on three literary works for children and youth in Slovak translations. Cecil Bodker (Silas and the Black Mare, 1977; Slovak translation in 1979 [1]) represents Danish literature in this particular selection, Ivona Brezinova (Boy and the Dog, 2011; Slovak translation in 2011 [2]) represents Czech literature and Alan Marshall (I Can Jump Puddles, 1956; Slovak translation in 1978 [4]) is the sample of Australian literature. In addition to their artistic persuasion and belonging to the literature for children, all the selected works are also related to the topic of the physical handicap affecting the lower limbs of certain literary characters. The paper has no ambition to offer a detailed interpretation study: literary texts are of interest to us as a basis for the analysis of a specific way of depicting a particular handicap. On the background of the monitored physical disability, we offer a comparison of all three works in relation to the genre, the authorВ’s strategy and the expected readerВ’s reception.
