WHAT ARE THE CREATIVE INDUSTRIES' NEEDS FOR INDOOR FILMING? HOW TO IMPLICATE THE CUSTOMER FROM THE BEGINNING OF NPD

Abstract

Although remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPASs) offer great advantages and creative possibilities, they are primarily designed for outdoor use by different end-users for activities such as inspections, agriculture, real estate, security and so on. The creative industries are starting to use RPASs for outdoor filming and photography. However, since the existing RPASs lack a precise, robust and affordable indoor positioning system as well as advanced safety features, the control of any RPAS in an indoor environment is particularly difficult and unsafe. Therefore, RPASs are not being employed professionally indoors, although there is a business opportunity in this field. This paper describes how a latent need can be transformed into new product development (NPD) and the links that are established with the final users to increase the market acceptance. The projectВ’s first step, consisting of identifying the creative industriesВ’ needs for indoor filming using RPASs, has been fulfilled. The three focus group sessions were successful. The selection of the informants, the appropriateness of the questionnaire and the comfortable environment that was created, together with the high level of interest that this new product has awakened, led to the team being able to gather good and sufficient information to define the features that the indoor drone needs to offer. On the other hand, the focus groups provided an opportunity to generate expectancy among informants in relation to the new product.
