Abstract

The 2030 agenda for sustainable development addresses the challenges of economic, health and development inequalities within and among countries and regions, by defining an ambitious framework to foster peaceful, just and inclusive societies in all over the world. In the pursuit of establishing win-win cooperation between all countries and all regions of the world, the framework envisages 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) to achieve sustainable development in a balanced and integrated manner of all key dimensions: economic, environmental, and social aspects. The paper tackled the implementation responsibilities of SDGs as key means for guiding national policies and long-term strategies for sustainable development. It has been performed a comparative analysis of two well-known dashboards for performance assessment related to the sustainable development of our current society: Better Life (BL) index developed by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and Quality of Life (QL) index from EU Eurostat data. The methodological flow comprised of exploring the growing importance of SDGs at all levels, to chart the course towards sustainable development of all countries, followed by a comparative analysis of the aforementioned dashboards for performance assessment, with the view to underline main similarities and differences of measurements’ indicators. The benefits of this research rely on exploring the development opportunities brought by the sustainable development goals (SDGs) for people, nations and all segments of society, inducing a structured analysis on the subject of measuring the state-of-play for sustainable development.
