Abstract

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is one of the most promising current design methods and plays a vital role in visualising the architectural process from the early de-sign phase up to the use of the buildings. However, there is a large gap in research on the evolutionary steps of architectural visualization from the outstanding discoveries of the Renaissance up to digital building information model we use nowadays. Particularly in response to the question: Which fundamental developments in architectural visualiza-tion have made possible the currently used Building Information Model since the revo-lutionary discoveries of the Renaissance, and what are the prospects? With the help of an extensive literature review, this study examines the developmental stages of architec-tural practice and architectural visualization since the Renaissance, as well as their communicative achievements and culture-creating or culture-changing effects. The analysis focuses on the triggers of significant developments, their importance for subse-quent methods and the transmission of knowledge across epochs.
