THE SHANGHAI COOPERATION ORGANIZATION ACTIVITY FOR THE PURPOSE OF REGIONAL SECURITY
Abstract
The events of the recent years, that have taken place in the countries of North Africa and Middle East ("Arab spring"), update the safety issues of regional and global unionsВ’ activity, in particular the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). Therefore, the problems of nuclear safety, along with fighting terrorism, extremism and drug traffic are of first-rate importance at the annual summits of SCO, what is reflected in the documentary and legal base of the organization. Besides, various mechanisms of SCO are being built-up, aimed at the situation stabilization in the region of member countries. This research examines the main directions of SCO activity for regional security maintenance. The research involves both theoretical and empirical methods. Using of structural and functional method provided finding out specifics of SCO activity in the main directions of regional security maintenance. A system approach turned out to be especially useful, allowing consideration of SCO internal structures activity and the arrangements held within the Organization. The research results reveal that SCO gradually becomes the major tool of fighting against extremism, terrorism and drug traffic, and also for nuclear disarmament assistance in the region of Central Asia. Over the period of its existence SCO has become an efficient factor for maintenance of regional security and stability of its member countries in terms of response to general challenges, development of joint approaches to settlement of those situations threatening peace and safety within the jurisdiction of SCO. Materials of the article can be used for comparative analysis of various structures, interstate unions functioning, which activity is directed to fighting regional and international challenges and threats.
