POST-EDITING OF PUBLICISTIC TEXTS IN THE CONTEXT OF THINKING AND EDITING TIME
Abstract
This article introduces the issue of machine translation, its basic concepts and principles. It explains the principles and approaches to post-editing, which is still an integral part of machine translation (MT) process. Although the quality of machine translation is still improving, MT outputs are not flawless. Machine translation is designed to help translators with their work – it provides them with rough translations and, afterwards, mistakes and discrepancies are corrected by translators or post-editors. MT outputs save translators? time, improve the output quality and post-editors can pay more attention to translation problems and follow stylistics in more details. The aim of our research was to find out, how post-editing works in machine translation from English to Slovak language, which represent two different types of languages (English as analytical, Slovak as synthetic language) in publicistic style of texts. Machine translation seems to work differently in different styles (better in publicistic and popular-scientific texts than in, for example, literary texts) and does not work equally reliable in every genre of the same style. We also investigated how knowing or not-knowing the source text influences the post-editing of machine translation. It seems to be an advantage for post-editors if they know (are familiar with) the source text (original text) because, in that case, post-editing is less time-consuming and we assume that post-edited texts are more understandable for readers.
