SUSTAINABLE SETTLEMENTS. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, REGEN VILLAGE AND BEDZED AS EXAMPLES OF SELF-SUFFICIENT COLONIES

Abstract

The idea of sustainable development was devised as an answer to the dynamic development of civilisation, in order to minimise its negative consequences. The main task that was set before society has been the outlining of new methods of utilising global resources. As a result, it was possible to plan a number of projects that meet the requirements of Sustainable Development and environmentally friendly architecture, built in a manner that stresses the social aspect of these settlements. This paper focuses on three such projects: Bainbridge Island, ReGen Village and BedZED, in addition to containing an analysis of how each of them accomplished the various tenets of sustainable development. The overarching goal of the paper is to formulate practical, simple guidelines that can be used by future designers and planners so that they too can make use of the valuable practical experience gained from these projects. These guidelines will allow the development of model approaches to meeting the various requirements of sustainable development in terms of designing and planning self-sufficient, environmentally friendly and socially responsible settlements. The popularisation of these guidelines and the aforementioned model approach will hopefully lead to an increase in the number of sustainable settlements.
