Abstract

Leisure time activities pursued by children are influenced by many factors, and a specific role is played by parents. The paper deals with the outcomes of the research of the relationship between leisure activities pursued by todayВ’s children and leisure activities pursued by their parents in their childhood. The research was carried out in the Czech Republic in 2016 and 2017 and focused on children between the ages of 11 and 15. One of the key research questions was: In what way and to what extent the parentsВ’ experience of leisure time in their childhood influences the leisure activities of their children? The data were gathered from 700 children (287 boys, 413 girls) and their parents using a questionnaire. The research of leisure activities was carried out using the leisure activities catalogue developed continuously by the authors. The catalogue divides the activities into 7 main categories (Information, IT and the virtual world, communication and general topics; Humanities and social activities; Literature and languages; Nature (science), technology, medicine, household and hobbies; Arts; Personal activities, travel, tourism and geography; Sports, games and fun). The research has confirmed the validity of the hypothesis assuming a strong impact of leisure activities pursued by parents (mothers and fathers) in their childhood on the leisure activities pursued by their children. The results allow us a deeper understanding of the inner dynamics of the relationships between parents and children represented in their leisure time.
